Domaine Carneros grows over 20 clones of Pinot Noir, each one hand selected for their unique contributions to our sparkling and still wines. In years when one clone shines bright, we choose to release it separately. The Calera Selection grows on our Tula Vista vineyard located just west of the Donum Estate on Ramal Road, a few short miles from the Château. In early 2014 we planted the Calera Selection on a western facing slope. This site of rolling hills and clay loam soil perched right on the edge of the San Pablo Bay is exposed to tremendous wind and fog, and is guaranteed to offer us an exciting new element of Carneros terroir. Only 6 barrels were selected for this blend with 50% of them being new. The fresh fruit profile built on a frame of firm acidity makes this 2020 Calera Selection an ideal candidate for cellar aging, which is why we chose the magnum format.

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Aromatically, the nose opens with a burst of Bing cherry, wild strawberry, orange peel, and licorice. The palate delivers more red fruit including red currant, cranberry, and more cherry, with a finish of black tea warmed by toasted spice. Its complex flavors will develop even further with aging.
Vineyard Notes
The 2020 vintage is defined by low yields and concentrated, complex fruit. Early spring frosts and rain during May fruit set limited the number of berries per cluster, which allowed the vine to concentrate more of its resources towards each berry during development. Summer drought kept berries small while optimal temperatures throughout July and August ripened them beautifully. Fewer, smaller berries resulted in wonderfully concentrated flavor in both the fruit and the wines.
Winemaker Notes
17 Months Barrel Aged in French oak, 50% new. Clones: 100% Calera Selection.
Food Pairing Notes
Our winemaker TJ recommends pairing this wine with a herb and goat cheese crostini with cranberry jam, and for a main course suggests a rich and savory dish such as braised rabbit with hen of the woods mushrooms, or pork chops with sour cherry sauce.
